Help! I need a new camera, suggestions?

The poor old Sony cybershot has been through the wars with me and is starting to come unraveled. I’m starting to look for a new camera, but researching past and present camera models is such a pain. Can anyone offer suggestions?

I’m looking for something cheap-and-cheerful, with good lowlight sensitivity that also fits easily in a pocket (no hulking DSLRs for now thanks), bonus points if it takes good pictures. Megapixels rating (I have learned) being also almost completely irrelevant.

whether it’s a new model or suggestions for any oldish-school relatively high-end classic that might be findable/heavily-discounted on ebay is a fine idea too. (I’ve had some excellent luck with the latter strategy recently)

help! thanks!

UPDATE – Thanks for the great tips so far, keep em’ coming this post could turn in to a good resource. AND as reward…

The stats at http://www.flickr.com/cameras/ might give you some ideas. For example, the Canon SD300 and SD400 were very popular back in their day but they’ve been losing favor over the last few months…so you may be able to find a used one of those for a decent price. The SD300 goes for around $200 these days while the SD400 is about $300.

Funny you should ask. I was having just this discussion with a professional photographer last night. He recommended this:

Here’s a great review of the camera:

  4. ooh it looks cool too. like angular black classic soviet-bloc spy style or something. or at least it could match my thinkpad nicely. hmm what does that say about thinkpads?

Have you considered just swapping for a newer Cybershot… I’ve always loved the quality I’ve gotten out of mine and across the family we had a pretty good cross section of comparable cameras – the Sony always seemed to have better picture quality, be less finnicky and the UI was far better. (The Fuji one person had was basically junk)

I wouldn’t hesitate picking another one up.

Jen’s professional advice is the Canon SD 600, which can be Ebay’d for less than $300.

Tom – I have a Panasonic Lumix FX-01 which I love. Small, great photos, decent manual control, big 2.5″ screen, and a fantastic lens:

Damn, that Panasonic LX2 looks like a sweet camera. And leaving the debate of megapixel vs quality aside, the 10 megapixels is cool. Love the size of the screen as well. If you get this one Tom, I definitely want to have a look at it when you pick it up.

  14. I second Jay’s vote for the Panasonic Lumix FX01. Bought mine a couple of months ago and I’m really happy with it.

The low light performance may be a bit of a weak spot though, I’d describe it as it’s decent but not great.
